PWHT

PWHT

(OP)
Hello,

I would like some help in determining the necessity of PWHT because I didn't understand very well the paragraph UW-40(f)(5)(d) about determining the nominal thickness of groove+fillet weld.

The groove design is similar to that in figure UW-16.1 (y-1).

The weld is between a head and the nozzle neck.

The thickness of the head is 32 mm and the thickness of the nozzle neck is 106 mm, should I consider the nominal thickness equals to thickness of the head (depth of the groove) + fillet weld throat dimension or should I compare them and use the thicker one?

To calculate the holding time at the PWHT temperature and the heating and cooling taxes should I use this nominal thickness or should I use the thickness of the thicker part, in this case, the thickness of the nozzle neck?

Thanks!!

Another information is that the groove is a double bevel and we have fillet welds in both sides.

RE: PWHT

Nominal thickness as stated in Section VIII-Div 1 UW-40 (f) is the thickness of the welded joint, and not the pressure part thickness (thicker part).

metengr,

In your opinion, in this case what part of the welded joint should be considered as the nominal thickness? The head thickness, because it's a full penetration joint?

RE: PWHT

Yes, if it is a full penetration welded joint.
