design of slab near transfer beams
design of slab near transfer beams
(OP)
Hi all, I would like to know how will you approach the design of slab near a transfer beam (A beam that is supporting a heavily loaded column or structural wall).
my approach would be design the slab generated from a FEM analysis by a computer. because if a have a continuous slab, the transfer beam being the middle support, instead of having a hogging moment at the portion of the transfer beam it will have a sagging moment. because the transfer beam will pull the slab down due to the possible large deflection of the beam. Then again, it will still depend on the stiffness of the beam if it will have large deflections. Usually i use this approach if the beam is not that deep compared to the load that it is carrying.
but i have encountered some engineers that would design slabs, near transfer beams, using conventional coefficient methods. even if the transfer beam is not that deep compared to the load that it is carrying!
Thanks for your inputs

The limit load capacity of the original rfg required will not be significantly altered with deflection of the transfer beam, but some additional cracking may occur.
