UG-10 and Cylindrical Acrylic Window

UG-10 and Cylindrical Acrylic Window

UG-10 and Cylindrical Acrylic Window

(OP)
Dear All
I am currently designing an ASME BPVC (U) pressure vessel, this vessel has an Cylidrical Acrylic (PMMA) viewport,(not classified as piping).
The design and fabrication of this window shall be according the PVHO-1 (section 2)
The PVHO-1 Introduction 1-1 states design, fabrication, inspection & stamping of the PVHO shall be in accordance with PVHO and ASME BPVC Section VIII. The vessel requires U-stamp.
If the viewport is designed, fabricated and tested acc the PVHO, is it allowed to be incorporated in the pressure vessel as meeting the BPVC, or should the window be accepted using UG-10.?, or is it not possible to get the vessel code compliant and stamped?

RE: UG-10 and Cylindrical Acrylic Window

See Section U-1(c)(2). It says pressure vessels for human occupancy are not covered by ASME VIII. However if the pressure vessel (that is the steel fabricated vessel without the acrylic viewport) is designed in accordance with ASME VIII it can be given a U Stamp. PVHO allows you to design the steel fabrication to ASME VIII div 2, inwhich case it would have a U2 Stamp.

There are some parts of PVHO-1 that allow shells and heads under external pressure to be allot thinner then ASME VIII. I wonder if these vessels could be given any Stamp. I wouldn't think so.

The actual acrylic window needs its own PVHO certificate, completely seperate from U-Stamp. And the seal design also needs to be reviewed by a PVHO AI to get a PVHO certification. But this seal design also has nothing to do with the U-Stamp. Remember PVHO covers electrical and valves etc that don't affect ASME VIII either.

That is how I interpret it.
