Ducting thickness calculation suitability
Ducting thickness calculation suitability
(OP)
Dear All,
Is it appropriate to use UG-27 to calculate the thickness of a ducting project? Our client require us to verify the thickness of the ducting to make sure that the thickness is enough to withstand the internal pressure of the ducting. I have some weird feeling to use ASME Section VIII Div 1 to calculate it as i think its for pressure vessel and not ducting. Can someone verify this for me? Is there any other code that can be used to calculate the thickness of the ducting? Material stainless Steel and the medium of operation is non lethal.
Regards,
wcw

If you have welded miter bend or elbow, you have to use B31.3, not Div. 1. Div. 1 does not cover miter bend or elbow.
The next question is what material you are using: SA or ASTM. If ASTM, use B31.3. If SA, use Div. 1. (However, we also use B31.3 for SA material on large welded duct)
The last question is what kind of hydrotest it will be performed or have been performed ? That will tell you what code shall be applied.
