How to tap a line from a substation?

How to tap a line from a substation?

How to tap a line from a substation?

(OP)
Dear all,

I'm fresh Engineer, and I'm faced with a question on how to tap an electric underground cable from a 33KV substation. I need any useful information on how does it go like! and what are the steps of doing this kind of connection!

the underground cable will be connected to a VCB and then to a 33/.4 KV transformer!

Please help

Thanks.

RE: How to tap a line from a substation?

Disconnect, cut-and-splice, test, connect! In that order.

Seriously: Don't do it if you need to ask how to do it. Get a qualified guy. You and many others will be sorry if you do it.

Skogsgurra thanks for the advice!

we are going to connect the cable to a compact substation .. so what i need to know?

are we going to ask the power company to disconnect the substation while we are taking the line! or no need to do that!

and what comes first laying the cable in the conduit! or connecting it from both sides!

True. But the "presentation ceremony" is sure to be spectacular.

khatibmhmd, are you responsible for putting together a bill of materials and cable route for this project? Or will you be expected to direct the work of the crew?

If its the former, I'd look over a few similar designs and modify them to suit the current situation. Then I'd make sure this job is assigned to a skilled underground crew and go out and watch how they put it together.

This is the sort of job a skilled journeyman can do, assuming you sent him/her out on the job with the correct materials. Watch how they do the job and ask questions (without getting underfoot).

One of the best jobs I ever had was working for an outfit that took all their new hire engineers and sent them out with a couple of crews for a few weeks to work with them. When I got finished, the foreman told me that most engineers refused to actually put their hands on anything or even get out of their cars. I thought it was fun, dragging cables through trenches, into vaults and manning a shovel (no energized work of course). Later, it became obvious who the "too good to get dirty" engineers were.

PHovnanian,

I am responsible to make the Bill of materials for this project, which is I already did!

Now I need to submit the METHOD OF STATEMENT for many things! so I need to know what is the method for tapping a 33KV cable from a compact 33KV substation to feed some loads.

I would be thankful if you can help.

RE: How to tap a line from a substation?

How did you make a bill of materials without knowing the method? It is not clear what you are trying to do. Is there a cable already in place that you need to connect to to serve a new 33-0.4 kV transformer? Is the cable direct buried or in conduit? Are there manholes? Is the cable terminated anywhere except at the substation? Are you running new cable from the "compact 33 kV substation? What is a compact 33 kV substation?

Jghrist,

the case is as follows:
*I work for a contracting company
*I have a 33/.4 KV transformer to serve
*I need to lay a cable in a concrete trench from a 33KV compact substation ( a photo is attached for this kind of substations)
*I already calculated the length of the cable (bill of materials)
*Now I just need to know what is the procedure in connecting such cable from the substation to the transformer ( the cable is not terminated anywhere except the substation).
*I need to know the method, in order to submit a technical proposal to the client.

Thanks

This site is a source of tips for those who have the basic knowledge. This site is not a source of education for those in over their heads. You need to hire local, competent, help. You'll not find what you need (or can trust) on the internet, this site or anywhere else.

Why do yo say that?

My experience wasn't quite that far back. But it was my understanding they continued that program until about 15 years ago, when they moved all construction out of the utility to subcontractors.
