Simulator to Plant matching Best pratice route ?

Simulator to Plant matching Best pratice route ?

(OP)
I'm a fairly resonable aspen user. As such take some responsibility for training, and i've developed in house training material for our systems and tips and tricks for system optimisation. I'd like to develop a training package for matching plant models.. and good starting points..and methods that can be used..e.g. once i've a mass balance say for a 80tray'd column how do i match and adjust the no of stages v actual plant performance etc..

this crosses aspen and kister type training so can anyone recommend
1. suitable refence for these type of questions..
2. Suitable books.. i have the luyben book on distillation design and cotnrol using aspen simulation but it is not pitched at the right level for what i want.

thanks in advance (i hope )

RE: Simulator to Plant matching Best pratice route ?

Hey James,

In 2007 I posted an FAQ on the problem you describe:
FAQ124-1340: How do I calculate Theoretical Stages using Plant Data?
I never could get the pictures to stay active (this was when we would embed using image shack), which is why I think that it never got that great of a rating although I use the technique regularly. Later I embedded a power point which I see still works. If it hadn't been such a hassel, I would have written a dozen FAQs along the same lines.

I have been using ASPEN (before "plus") since about 1981-2 when I was at the University of Tennessee. The interfaces and background data structures may have changed, but the problems and methods are always valid. Part of the realization of this FAQ came from a Kister course I attended 20+ yrs ago. It turns out to be quite common that people fail to realize the the distillate, reflux, feed enthalpy, etc should be set at plant values during the reconcilliation process. Some years later I also realized the mixing network to be a fast way to generate consistent material balances for feed/products which avoids least squares minimization, etc. These two techniques form the basis.

You have given me great advice over the years. I have a stack of index cards documenting different techniques for modeling of existing processes which I call my "Modeling Handbook for Plant Engineers", although I have never created the actual document. If I can help you with your work or if you can give me a copy at the end, I would be honored.

best wishes always,
sshep
