Cold Weather Spiral

Cold Weather Spiral

Cold Weather Spiral

(OP)
I'm tryng to do some research on the use of spiral welded pipe on gas transmission, or gas gathering systems in cold weather climates. I think Canada has the history that I am looking for, but I have yet to find any documentation that would support that theory. Can any of you Canadians come to my rescue? Any pointer to either some public or pay4 info on the net would be just the thing that I'm looking for. With, or concerning, maintenance, integrity and reliability history, even better.

Thanks

RE: Cold Weather Spiral

Spiral wound pipe was very common everywhere in the 1960's. By the 1970's so much of it had failed in service that no new spiral wound pipe was being installed. There was a lot of it installed all across the Rockies in some pretty harsh climates, but I don't remember many people publishing their results. The information mostly passed by word of mouth within companies and from company to company in the halls at conferences. Facilities guys published even less in the 70's than they do today. Good luck finding case studies.

Canada was apparently using improved quality spiral for the last 20 years while we were sitting around with our heads in the sand.

But this is all the hard evidence I've found so far.
First use of X80 in North America and spiral as well.
Nova Pipeline Corp. - Eastern Alberta System 1994
Matzhiwn Pipeline 33 (to 54?) km 48" spiral pipe 12 mm WT X80

I know the evidence is out there. I just have to be patient.

RE: Cold Weather Spiral

The weld failures in spiral really delayed market acceptance of ERW pipe. I think that wen ERW pipe became readily acceptable, a couple of manufacturers applied those weld techniques to big inch pipes, but I still don't any of it going in with smaller diameters than 30-inch.

I don't think they make any under 20". It's best value is well over 24". After you get past 36", there's hardly any other options.
