Surface finish measurement

Surface finish measurement

Surface finish measurement

(OP)
Hi
This is PVK Raju I would like to know how to measure surface finish on inside groove machined part

Example: We have one of the machined part (component) like inside groove width 3mm only (as per drg. surface finish is 0.8Ra)for that we have to measure surface finish and Surface finish tester probe unable to move ,because width is is very small. And also standard reference blocks unable feeling by hand due to width is very small.

For the above situation how to measure the surface finish

Anybody have ideas please suggest me and help me

Thanks & Regards,
P V K Raju

RE: Surface finish measurement

How did the manufacturer claim to achieve this surface finish in the first place? Is this for an o-ring?

RE: Surface finish measurement

There are optical profilometers. Don't know what the limitations are.

Alternately, you could have the shop make a sample with a wider groove using the same process. Wide enough to use your contact profilometer. That would give some degree of confidence in the process.

RE: Surface finish measurement

MintJulep is correct, optical measuring systems (also called optical microscopes, white light interferometers) are one option. If the groove is not able to be directly imaged with the instrument, one option is to use a mirror to reflect the incident beam onto the sample. There are also some systems using lasers instead of optics. Here are some links to equipment suppliers:

A replication method could work.

.8 Mu millimeter (32 Mu in) is this correct.

is a very simple to machine & very simple to measure with profilometer.
contact the sale engineer rep of your particular instrument & ask for the correct TIP.

or check this one with the optional probe tips.

Hi
Every one thanks for your immediate response
Yes,it is Inside groove and it is O ring groove only. But as per customer requirement we have done machining operation but we are unable to measure the surface finish
Thanks for your valuable advise. Other then profile meter is their any easy solution?.
We have this type parts are very small lot qty. We are unable to buy this type instrument (cost fact)

Is their any suggestion please me.

Pay to have an outside company verify it.
