ASME VIII Div I certification

ASME VIII Div I certification

ASME VIII Div I certification

(OP)
Hi All,

In order to have a vessel certified to ASME Code, it has to be manufactured by a U stamp holder, but dose the designer of the vessel have to ASME certified?
Any direction of relevant code section to read?

Thanks

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

Spoonful, you don't specify but the reference to U Stamp implies Sec VIII, Div 1. Answer is no. I am not aware of any Sec VIII, Div 1 provision that addresses designer qualifications one way or the other.

Regards,

Mike

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

I agree with SnTMan, the manufacturer ultimately takes responsibility, so the ability or qualifications of the designer are irrelevant.

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

"...the ability or qualifications of the designer are irrelevant."

Just one of the things that make this line of work SO rewarding, thanks TGS4:)

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

I know SnTMan. You're preaching to the choir. Sigh....

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

It's not just me then, good to know:)

The manufacture is under the directive of the designer, at least in regarding with the vessel design, should the design be at lest somehow liable?

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

Spoonful, even when meeting all relevant Code rules and employing the best engineering judgement the designer is always potentially liable for the design. As in any field.

Mike

Thanks Mike, my question was just refer to per TGS4 said, the ultimate responsibility goes to the manufacture.

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

Spoonful - from the perspective of the Code, there are no responsibilities for the designer (yet). All responsibility rests on the manufacturer. If the manufacturer contracts out design services, then there may be contractual obligations.

Hi TGS4, what if it is the other way around, the designer got the job and designed the vessel and then subcontract the fabrication to the manufacture?

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

This is so relavent in today's times. It is hard to find any experienced people in the 10yr to 30 year range.

all the new engineers want to plug it in the computer and what is spits out is correct.

They have no idea what to change and when to change it.

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

Spoonful, ultimate responsibilty still rests with the manufacturer. However: As the party contracting out the fabrication it is incumbent upon the design entity to insure the fabricator is meeting his responsibilities.

Mike

RE: ASME VIII Div I certification

From ASME's perspective, I believe that what SnTMan said is correct - the responsibility is with the manufacturer, the holder of the U-Stamp (or its current incarnation). Everything else is a commercial/contractual concern. Is it important, yes; is it a requirement of the Code, no.
