Modifying Optical Burner

Modifying Optical Burner

(OP)
Hello, I would like to modify the optical driver burner. Where can I find schematics, circuit designs and such? I would like to modify the photolithography process to move freely rather than be fixed to a polar coordinate. I am fairly new to EE. Any help would be appreciated.

RE: Modifying Optical Burner

You won't find any schematics on such subjects. That's proprietary information that companies have no interest in letting out in the wild. You'll have to puzzle it out yourself. Look around for a description of how CDROM readers work. The motion is the same reading and writing but descriptions are more common for CDROM readers.

You will find that there is coarse AND fine servo control involved.

RE: Modifying Optical Burner

There is no way to modify a standard CD/DVD drive to do this without massive modifications. The head is mounted on a rail system that only allows it to move radially, and the disk hub motor provides the lateral motion. This is not just an EE problem.

Agree with IRstuff and smoked. There's some serious ME in there. Maybe even physicist.

Best to you,

RE: Modifying Optical Burner

For course resolution, raster (X-Y) to polar conversion (CD burner hardware) can be done in software.

This is not likely to be applicable, but might spur some ideas.

Another approach might be to extract mechanical hardware from a flatbed scanner and/or a printer. But you'd be unlikely to achieve fine motion control with this approach.

Wow so many feedback!

As I thought, it is out of my field to actually change the mechanical motion. However, the ultimate goal is not to actually change the polar coordinate system to a Cartesian coordinate system but just to gain control of the way pits and lands are created. It is my fault that I stated it poorly in the opening post. Actually, I want to be able control arrangement of the the pits and land structure so that it is not aimed to store data but to create some sort of physical geometric shape. ie - arrange all the pits to spell a word.

@VE1BLL: Actually that might be quite helpful, I will look into it

Thanks you all!
