Best File Format for 3-D Scanned Data

Best File Format for 3-D Scanned Data

I'm to receive data from a service bureau from castings that they are 3-D scanning. I'd like to be
able to take that data and open the file in Solidworks and be able to convert it to a part file in order to
complete additional work on the part. Is there a preferred file format I should be requesting from the service
bureau that will import into Solidworks with little problem(s)? Thanks very much.

RE: Best File Format for 3-D Scanned Data

What file types 'can' they export?
Ask for any on the list of the file types you see within SW. The .iges may work for you.

Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking about parasolid.... but thought I'd poll around if
anyone has any experience with this. Thanks again.

If they can do it, I'd say parasolid.

Parasolid should be your first choice if they can generate it. Iges might just get you a point cloud, now that would be fun.

I usually go with IGES or STL.
