API 1104 Welding Procedures vs. ASME Sec IX welding procedures
API 1104 Welding Procedures vs. ASME Sec IX welding procedures
(OP)
Hey guys,
I have to make a couple of API-1104 welding procedures for a project we are going to be working on, and was hoping to get some insight on the differences in the codes and what each code requires. I am extremely familiar with ASME Sec IX but I dont do much work with API-1104. Could someone please explain the major differences? and if possible is there a simple way to convert from one code to another (for example... I have a standard 6010 - 7018 SEC IX procedure, what would be the additional requirements to requalify this procedure to API-1104?)
I realize that the API-1104 codes are generally more suited for pipeline welding (since they allow downhand) and are not as strict on the NDE requirements.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Rob

As Steve has stated you need to get a copy of API 1104 and review it - the differences between API 1104 and ASME IX are huge.
Diameter and WT spring to mind - and that is just off the top of my head, have never really looked in to the differences between the two codes,

RE: API 1104 Welding Procedures vs. ASME Sec IX welding procedures
For qualification, differences include number of tensile specimens, tensile specimen width (API~ 1", ASME IX, ~ 3/4"), number and type of bends, nicks, etc. Fillet and groove procedures are qualified seperately.
As expected, exssential variables are different, too. For procedure qualification, API groups OD and WT into 'suggested groupings', while welder qualification ranges (for single qualification) are set.
FYI: if using an API procedure, you want to go to 49CFR Parts 192 (gas) and 195 (liquid)for further welding requirements. see below.
