Hi,

Can someone tell me what kind of steel is ASTM A252 grade1,2,and3 please? Any chemical composition/mirostructural information.

The standard only give the requirement for mechanical properties. I am doing a research about NDT of linepipe steels. These are the potential materials that are going to be tested.

Many thanks!

RE: astm a252 chemical/microstructure info

The chemical composition of the steel pile will be what the purchaser and supplier agree to which meets the mechanical property requirements. The supplier has to only meet the maximum phosphorus content of 0.050% by mass. The options could include - carbon steel or microalloy steel.

RE: astm a252 chemical/microstructure info

A-252 is for pipe piles not pipelines. You should not be evaluating it for pipeline use.

Thanks for the reply!

Do you have any specific composition examples for the Grade1/2/3 please? If carbon steel is used, do I expect some difference in ferrite/bainite ratio?

Cheers.

RE: astm a252 chemical/microstructure info

They are simple low carbon steels and will have a pearlitic microstructure. Again, A252 cannot be used for pipeline or other fluids carrying piping. They are used to support or as part of foundations for structures.
