PQR qual for PJP to Sect IX
PQR qual for PJP to Sect IX
(OP)
I'm looking for some clarification on testing a PJP groove, Procedure Qual. To Sect. IX.
Sect. IX implies that PJPs can be qualified per Table QW-451. Table QW-451 (in my humble opinion) applies to CJPs only as there is no discussion or direction for macros or removal of unfused base metal prior to bending.
Again in my opinion, this would appear to say that to qual., a PJP. I need to testout on a CJP. Then apply resulting PQR to the PJP.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Have a look at QW 290.5 Test Coupon Preparation and Testing

Thx for the replies.
I interpret 290.5 as applicable specifically to 290 Temper Bead Welding. (No?)
QW-451 does not reference removal of unfused joint mat'l prior to test.
QW-202 Types of tests require. QW-202.1 refs QW-451 & QW-463. Niether discuss prep of PJP matl's. QW-202.2(b) states PJP shall be tested per QW-451, But no prep for PJP matl's. I am resisting the temptation to assume here I can make changes to the plate not stated in the spec. Thx always R.
RE: PQR qual for PJP to Sect IX
I only noted that clause as you apparently couldn't find any reference to PJP coupons in the code. " Partial Penetration groove weld test coupons only qualify partial penetration groove welds, fillet welds and build up."
Irrespective of that you still need to comply with QW-451 as noted by metengr.
Have a look at QW 462.2 Note 1
"When weld deposit thickness "t" is less than coupon thickness "T", side bend specimen thickness may be "t"."
So, you can machine the unfused material off prior to tensile / bends but it does seem like a lot of extra work and cost for not much benefit - conducting a CJP test would appear to be much more practical,

Agreed on all points.
This will be our action.
Only wished I seen this up front.
I'll know better next time.
