Nozzle load at end of a cone. + nozzle at end of cone better option than on dish end??

Hi All,

For a nozzle attached and the end of cone section, I found some previous thread on this topic. Use bending stress of M/Z, shear stress of F/A. That is treat the end of cone as straight solid pipe, which the area that to resist all the loads are of a ring shape. My question is what if the cone has knuckle/flare radius(see attached type b,c ,and d), then at the radius there will be additional bending? What if the cone doesn't have any radius at all (see attached type a), then should there be any stress concentration factor? Any suggestions?

I am thinking the idea of having a cone reducing vessel section then add a nozzle at end of cone, it might be a better method to construct vessel compare to use a dish end and reinforcing pad. I haven't done a calculation yet, but I feel that have the vessel dia reduced by a cone, hence thinner vessel wall will be required, hence the nozzle neck thickness only needs to resist its internal pressure, don't have to consider extra reinforcement required. As method of dish end and nozzle, depending on the nozzle size and pressure, normally will require a reinforcement pad. Even cone with knuckle may also need reinforcing ring, but I have a feeling it would require less reinforcing than what's required on a dish end opening. Any one have experience/advise on this?

Thanks in advance for all your thoughts.
Regards
Spoonful
