Longitudinal Splitting of Heavy Timbers
Longitudinal Splitting of Heavy Timbers
(OP)
So in the case of large timbers columns or beams, how much longitudinal 'splitting', parallel to the grain, is normal or acceptable before one needs to be concerned about the capacity of the memember? Is there some sort of reference or code requirement in this regard? These particular columns are 14" x 14" x 35', white pine and around 120 years old. Thanks.
