Help - genius needed!

Help - genius needed!

Help - genius needed!

(OP)
Hello,

I work for a company that manufactures components used in the mining industry. The components we manufacture tend to be very heavy, durable and manufactured mainly from mild steel and EN8 and EN9. My boss has asked me to investigate whether we can import the same material components from China.

My problem is that the Chinese use different terms to describe their steel and I don't know whether I am ordering a similar material.

Can you tell me whether ASTM 1045 is an equivalent quality to EN8 and EN9 and whether Q235B is a similar quality to 300WA mild steel.

I would be very grateful for your help.

Dan

RE: Help - genius needed!

I would look at www.matweb.com , very helpful site for cross referencing material grades.
ASTM 1040 would be equivalent to EN8.

Highly recommend planning on testing material sourced from china regularly. The first batch may be in spec but quality fade is an issue. Just had an aluminum alloy A380 tested, it didn't even come close.

Comprehension is not understanding. Understanding is not wisdom. And it is wisdom that gives us the ability to apply what we know, to our real world situations

Cast has it right - check everything. We do and does work - but takes more time and money. Not always sure it is worth it.

To quote 'trust but verify'.
We checked 4 to 5 product batches before accepting with then cursory testing.
