Fire safe test

(OP)
Hi Guys,
I am new to this field. Can anybody explain what is the intention of Fire safe test for mechanical valves?.Whats the purpose of this test.API 607 states the method of doing but I am unable to find why to do?
Thanks
Rajj

RE: Fire safe test

The intent of the test is to prove that even when exposed to a fire, the valve will do a reasonable job containing the fluid inside so that it does not leak out and continue to feed the fire. Think of a valve containing gasoline that if exposed to an external fire nearby, and all the seals melted and the gasoline leaking out and onto the fire. The fire would get worse.

It is important to realize that fire tests do allow some external and some through (internal) leakage during and after the test. Just not a lot of leakage.

RE: Fire safe test

Please also note the markets realities and use of language:

1. Firesafe tested: Actually tested.Several international available certified methods by different authorities. Certification available to confirm that exact this valve construction has been actually tested, or as near a type as allowed. (Near sizes and pressure classes might be allowed under the test description).

2. Firesafe construction: Usually means that the valve has a construction similar or equal to valves already tested, but not actually tested or within the available or described testrange itself. Certificate confirming test not available.

RE: Fire safe test

In addition to gerhrdl's 'Firesafe by construction' its also called 'Firesafe Design'
