pressure rating and surge pressure

(OP)
My engineering department are raising concerns that a Copper Nickel pipe system utilizing 16bar rated pipe, and ANSI 150# flanges will not be able to withstand a 25 bar surge pressure. Are they right to be worried or are they being overly cautious ?

RE: pressure rating and surge pressure

Hi,

Have you checked this with ASME B16.5 (Pipe Flanges & Flanged Fittings) pressure-temperature tables?
I can do that for you but don't know which material group you are in.

ABSOLUTELY NOT ALLOWED!

Big, you need to stop being so wishy washy smile

RE: pressure rating and surge pressure

BigInch is correct for a system designed to ASME B31.1 or B31.3. You do not mention temperature so it assumed that it is < 100F. what is the design code used?

I am interested to know where the 25bar came from. Is this from a comprehensive waterhammer analysis?
If this is an estimate using the Joukowsky formula it could be an underestimate as this formula does not cover all systems and events.

If measured in the field and SCADA instruments are used it could be woefully understated. SCADA instruments are de-tuned for stability and just do not pick up the maximum pressure surge.

And for B31.4 and B31.8, as well as for AU, BS, EU, DNV and China Codes.
I have not read the Russian-CIS codes yet, but I can check those for you, if you think I should.
