Crack propagation direction (ABAQUS X-FEM)

Crack propagation direction (ABAQUS X-FEM)

(OP)
Hello to everyone

It is my first time using crack propagation with X-FEM in ABAQUS.

I see that ABAQUS models moving cracks with a cohesive segments method and phantom nodes. I have read that you need to specify a damage initiation criterion (maximum principal stress) and a damage evolution law (fracture energy). It seems that the damage initiation criterion (maximum principal stress) defines the crack propagation path, am I right? Or is it only responsible for the first kink of the crack and then is the energy release rate criterion the one that takes care of it?

Contour integral evaluation is not yet supported during crack growth in ABAQUS so, in any case, it does not seem that they use the SIFs in order to calculate the crack path.

Any tips about it?

Thanks a lot for your help
