Gap in connections

Gap in connections

Gap in connections

(OP)
We have T,Y,K typ tube to tube connections fillet welded in a project. In some cases the fit up gap is greater than the code allowable 3/16”. The code does not address what the remedial fix is for gaps larger than this. The erector is requesting to butter the base metal but putting an additional bead of weld there to help close the gap and then apply the fillet weld. Will this cause a reduction in weld strength? Contractor claims we can't use backer rods.

RE: Gap in connections

Buttering is recommended in D1.1 (2010) commentary C-2.7.3 (3) to minimize the probability of laminar tearing.
