Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

(OP)
Hi all,

I'm curious about the wear resistance between two similar grades of plain carbon steel. If I have samples of both 1018 and 1024 and they are through hardened to HRC55, would the 1024 steel possess higher wear resistance? My intuition tells me that since the hardness is the same for both samples that the wear resistance should be the same, but I'm also thinking that 1024 will have a greater affinity to form carbides and could provide greater wear resistance via this mechanism. Any thoughts?

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

Both should essentially the same wear resistance.

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

Agree. Normally, carbon content does play a direct role in wear resistance. In this case the difference in carbon content between the two steel grades is not significant enough to show an advantage.

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

The only time there might be a difference in the wear resistance of various grades of unheat treated carbon steel, would be with the resulfurized free machining grades. The sulfur would tend to minimize adhesive wear.

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

I think if there is any advantage or disadvantage it depends on the type of wear anticipated.
Most modern sources discount hardness' effect on erosive wear, and the difficulty of predicting erosive wear generally.

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

1018 and 1024 through hardened to HRC 55? I don't think you'll do better than the mid 40's HRC.

RE: Wear resistance of 1018 vs. 1024

I think the original post was a hypothetical hardness.
