boiler code in texas

boiler code in texas

I have a steam drum that we are doing some weld crack repairs on an internal baffle that attaches to the shell. We grinded a fillet weld down where the baffle attaches to the shell and re welded the fillet weld. I was thinking that this would not require a r stamp due to the fact that it is not a pressure retaing weld. Am I correct or do I need to fill out a r-1 and treat as a code weld for a r-stamp.

RE: boiler code in texas

As a weld to the pressure part, we would consider it a Routine Repair under the NBIC and document it under an R-1. Advise consulting your AI.

RE: boiler code in texas

If the original weld was completely removed and you are welding directly to the pressure part this will fall under the NBIC, which means a Form R-1 will be required. Routine weld repairs can be referenced in your QC Manual but must still be approved by the Inspector and the Jurisdiction. Some Jurisdictions do not permit routine weld repairs.

Thanks for the input. I talked to the AI. We will treat this as a routinre repair and use a R-1.

RE: boiler code in texas

The State of Texas requires transmittal of the original R-1 to the Chief Boiler Inspector for filing.

There are typically remnants of caustic chemicals in steam drums, so welding tothe pressure retainig section may imply grinding and uffering with a weak citric acid solution to remove caustic deposits- failure to skip that step may lead to a brittle weld.

Also, if the cause of the craking is differential expansion during fast depressuring of the drum then some sort of thermal stress reducer detail may be needed- see the boiler OEM
