Crack advice to BS7910

Crack advice to BS7910

(OP)
Hi guys,

First post and not sure this is the place but,

I am looking at a weld flaw between two plates butt welded together.

I have reviewed the asme IX and bs 7910 and I am confused slightly about planar/non planar classification.

Basically the flaw in question is behind the weld in one the plates. The flaw is similar to a sub surface crack therefore with length 23mm and depth into the thickness of 3.6mm

However the flaw is not strictly a crack as a depth of 5mm has been identified, this dimension is perpendicular to the length in 2d looking onto the surface if that makes sense!

Can i just treat the flaw as l = 23 and a = 3.6? ignoring the 5mm? No dimensions for the crack width seems to be specified?

It is effectively a 3d rectangular prism and it is perfect aligned with the axis of the plate, therefore not really non-planar.

Any help much appreciated
