Training for mwd/lwd field engineering

(OP)
I am strongly considering applying for MWD/LWD field engineering positions with some major oilfield service providers. I have a few questions that I would appreciate any insight on:

1. Are the skills that you learn as a drilling service field engineer transferrable to any other jobs/industries, or would your technical skills be pigeon-holed into this role? For example, would the drilling expertise be applicable to mining engineering?

2. As a recent graduate with NO experience, do you think it is better to stick with the large companies (and their established training programs) or should I look at smaller companies too? From what I gather, the smaller companies pay more but are more volatile... so they are more suitable for more experienced professionals?

Thanks in advance!!!
