Difference between types of spectrometry?

Difference between types of spectrometry?

Difference between types of spectrometry?

(OP)
Dear All,
We wanted to test chemical composition of one our carbon steel plates as per ASME Sec II Part A - SA-751, clause 9(test methods). I opted for E-403 spectrometric analysis of steel, but our AI rejected it and said to use E-212 Spectrographic analysis of steels (rod-to-rod technique). My questions are:

1. What is the technical difference between the two?

2. Why it is not allowed to use E-403? or what are the limitations of E-403?

RE: Difference between types of spectrometry?

There is nothing in SA 751 that prohibits use of E-403 methodology or even states that one test method is preferred over another method. I even reviewed SA 20 General Requirements for Plates and there is nothing to exclude one test method over another. Go back and discuss this with the AI. If you want specifics on either test method you need to review the specific chemical test methods side by side for comparison.

RE: Difference between types of spectrometry?

I thought that ASTM E212 was obsolete, actually the words are "WITHDRAWN, NO REPLACEMENT" in 1997.
it was fairly generic, it has been superseded by much more method specific specs.

I agree with MET that there is no specific call out as to which method you use, you simply must use a recognized analysis method.

RE: Difference between types of spectrometry?

Actually, most met labs will report chemical analysis using ASTM E415. Sometimes, ASTM/ASME material specifications are behind in removing obsolete reference specifications.
