I have 7010 Aluminium alloy heat treated to T6, and wondered if anyone can clarify the following: I have been told conflicting information about how to verify if the material has been heat treated correctly, which are:

1. You only need to check the mechanical properties of this material to determine that it has been correctly heat treated to T6

2. That you have to check the mechanical properties, and the conductivity of the material in order to be certain that the material has been heat treated correctly to T6.

It is argued in 1 above, that if the mechanical properties are correct for T6 then the conductivity will be correct. Conversly the argument in 2 above, is that it is possible to heat treat the material and get mechanical properties that meet the T6 requirement, but that the conductivity would not be.

What do the governing specs and drawing say? If AMS 2658 or similar conductivity requirement is called out, then you have to do it.

In this case I am the Customer, the supplier is asking to stop the conductivity test claiming that it is unnecessary, my staff are claiming that it is, but none are either metallurgists or heat treatment experts.

RE: I have 7010 Aluminium alloy heat tr

Which mechanical properties are you testing for?

Forget worrying about confirming T6. Listed specifications for 7010 are AMS 4203, 4204, and 4205; each requires a different minimum conductivity. Look at the correct standard and test in accordance as Swall mentioned. You also may have to perform additional tests as indicated in the appropriate standard such as Charpy-impacts and/or fracture toughness.
