modeling through bolts in SAP 2000

modeling through bolts in SAP 2000

(OP)
Hi all,

To repair the bottom chord of a wood roof truss, we are looking sistering a portion of it (8 ft. on either side of king post, the total length between panel points is about 36 ft.) by attaching channels on the sides via through bolts. My question is, how do I model the connection between the existing wood chord and the new channels on the side?

Thanks in advance for any comments and suggestions.

RE: modeling through bolts in SAP 2000

You should assume that no sliding takes place between the chord and new channels and model the cross section using section designer, or by providing its inertia data (area, moments of inertia, moduli etc) manually. In this way the analysis can be carried out properly and the results (forces and displacements) van be used to check the adequacy of the channels and the chord.
The assumption that no sliding occurs should be validated by calculating the longitudinal shear on the bolts and checking that it can be carried safely.

Regards.
