2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

(OP)
Previous codes have had Wood Structural Panel Diaphragm allowables for nails based on spacing and blocking. In the new 2012 IBC I am only seeing values for staples in Table2306.2(1). Does anyone know what's going on? Did they pull the nailing allowables out and is there a different reference now to get these values from? Maybe in the newest NDS? Thanks for any input.

RE: 2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

Check to see if the 2012 IBC refers you to the SDPWS-08 for the values. If so, you can get a free download of it from http://www.awc.org/Standards/SDPWS.html.

RE: 2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

I believe they are now deferring to the 2008 NDS Special Provisions for Wind and Seismic. Typical wood design follows the 2010(2011?) NDS specifications but I think the wind and seismic portion is still referencing 2008.

The years maybe incorrect but yes, 2012 IBC defers to the NDS now.

RE: 2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

Just to clarify, the 2012 IBC references NDS--2012 and ANSI/AF&PA SDPWS--2008. SDPWS--2008 includes diaphragm shear capacities for wood structural panel diaphragms with nails. Interestingly (and probably appropriately), the 2012 IBC no longer includes capacities for nailed diaphragms, and the 2008 SDPWS no longer includes capacities for stapled diaphragms, so there is only one source for each diaphragm type with no duplication of information.

RE: 2012 IBC Wood Structural Panel Diaphragms

Yeah, they now reference the SDPWS and NDS. When I bought my 2012 I saw that and sent them an e-mail wondering what happened and they said it was all in the NDS Standards now.
