Can API5L Grade A or B pipe be used

Can API5L Grade A or B pipe be used

Can API5L Grade A or B pipe be used for Region 0 in Figure 1 of NACE MR0175/ISO15156-2 2009 without calling up any special requirements?

The impression given in the NACE document in Clause 7.1.1 and 7.2.1.3 is that no special precautions are needed but then goes on to list General Requirements for Carbon and Low Alloy Steels, via Clause A.2, including metallurgical conditions; Clause A.2.1.2 states a maximum hardness of 22HRC and Clause A.2.1.4 says that welding has to be in accordance with Clause 7.3.3 which, in turn, says that the welding standards have to be agreed between the supplier and purchaser. So it seems that to simply buy API5L Grades A and B from a stockist is not an option and so I would need to order these grades with additional requirements. Is my understanding correct? If I were to operate in Region 0, could I use API 5L direct from a stockist with no additional requirements?

RE: Can API5L Grade A or B pipe be used

API5L gr A or B are ok in Zone 0, provided the classification Zone 0 is correct. However, there are cautions in clause 7.2.1.3, like stress concentration factor.

Thank you for your reply. I agree with what you say - that metallurgically API5L Grade A or B would be OK in Region 0. However, the MR0175/ISO standard appears to ask for more than "off the shelf" Grades A and B (see previous post). This means that even for an environment with a few ppm H2S I would have to purchase Grade A and B with the extra requirements of hardness and agreement on weld procedures. I don't think that these extra requirements are necessary for Region 0 but the standard appears to insist on them. Am I missing something?

RE: Can API5L Grade A or B pipe be used

Annex A is for Regions 1, 2 and 3. The first sentence of 7.2.1.3 appears to have been written by a lawyer. Also, the sub-subclause is for SSC and there could still be an issue with HIC at a 'few ppm H2S.'
