IEC use in US

IEC use in US

IEC use in US

(OP)
I am intereted in using cast resin transformers (think GEOFOL) in the US. They do not have a UL listing but do have an IEC listing.

Does the National Electrcial code allow the use of IEC equipment (is IEC recognized as a qualified testing standard in the US)

Thanks.

RE: IEC use in US

No. There is no specific requirement that it be UL listed either, but there is a requirement that they be listed by an "NRTL", Nationally Recognized Testing laboratory, and there is an official list of vetted NRTLs maintained by OSHA that you can access from the internet.

"IEC" is a set of standards that are self-certified by manufacturers, so it is not an independant 3rd party testing authority in the eyes of anyone here in the US. UL is just one of the NRTLs, but perhaps the best known, and they have offices all over the world to help you. But you will notice that TUV is also on that list, and TUV has offices all over the world. In addition, Intetek, who uses the "ETL" label, is a conglomeration of many different smaller testing labs all over the world as well.

RE: IEC use in US

Since there are cast resin transformers available with UL listings, the local AHJ may not allow the use of non-UL transformer. You can always ask for a variance.
