Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

(OP)
Hi,
From the document explanation, I could not understand the significance of cut line angle inside wrap/unwrap curve settings. I tried to change the values from 0-360 degrees, some time curve moves its location but cannot understand the concept behind this.
Pl help me if you have any example file.
Thanks

RE: Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

I can't really explain it, but on Monday I'll try and find someone who can.

Hi John,

Thanks for your reply, hope to know those options soon.

RE: Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

If you go to the Help file for Wrap/Unwrap Curve (while in the Wrap/Unwrap Curve dialog, select the 'F1' button) and at the top of the page select the 'Related Topics' option (starting with NX 8.0 you will find this same information under the option on the Right-side of the page titled 'Wrap/Unwrap Curve Terminology'), you will see a diagram showing some examples related to the various terms and options used in the this function including what the 'Cut Line' is. Now while it states that it can be used for both Wrapping and Unwrapping of a curves, from what I've learned, it appears to only have any real value when UNWrapping a curve.

For a better idea of what this actually means, open the attached file below and go to the expression system and edit the value of the expression named 'Cut_Line_Angle' (note that I've added two associative line segments to create a 'closed' shape representing what looks like the face of the cone having been Unwrapped). If you edit this angle expression you will see the relationship between the start and end points of the curves relative to the cone. In essence this angle parameter is controlling where the 'face' of the cone is being 'split' if it was the face, rather then just the edges, which we were unwrapping.

Anyway, I hope this helps explain what this option does.

Hi John,

Thanks for your detailed explanation, its great to know the option.

Please check my attached file, I used Cylinder and unwrap the curve using cut angle line 0 degree. Suppose if I change to 90 deg it will come at the middle of the cylinder but if I use 10, 20,30, 40 degrees there was no effect on the unwrap curve, am I doing anything wrong in this file?

RE: Wrap/Unwrap Curve setting option - cutline angle significance

I suspect that as my tests have shown the documentation appears to indicate as well, that this option only seems to result in some predictable when the curves being Unwrapped are 'periodic', that is, they have no start or end points (like a circle). Then it would seem that both the 'name' of the option, 'Cut Line', and the example I supplied as well as what you see in the documentation, would indicate that this option is there to help define what has be an otherwise arbitrary result of taking a 'periodic' curve and representing it as a 'NON-periodic' curve. I still plan to follow-up with the original developer of this function, but I suspect that what we have here is something that perhaps a better explanation of when and where to use this option might clarify things. If I learn anything new or earth-shattering, I'll pass it along.

Thanks John,
Hope to see this function information works as per the developer.
