Taper in shell area

Taper in shell area

I am Baiju(Static equipment engineer), Kindly go through the query and help me with valuable suggestion.

In our case a shell is coming with 1:3 taper, kindly let me know that whether we need to check the hydrostatic stress over that area. If it is overstressed then what is the solution to get out of this. Nominal thk. Of shell is 100 mm and taper end thk is 90mm. Applicable code ASME sec VIII div 2.

THANKS FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION AND SUPPORT IN ADVANCE.

RE: Taper in shell area

If I understand the question, you're tapering the edge of a shell plate where it welds to a head, as required by ASME, and the issue is that the tapered edge is then automatically thinner than the required thickness for that shell. I believe this is acceptable and is the intent of the code.

RE: Taper in shell area

Baijuz, I believe no one knows what you are talking about. No one can give you any advice if you don't provide the vessel sketch.

Yes, Mr. JStephen your understanding is correct, but if we run calculation in PV elite with 90mm thk at the edge of shell plate, that particular part is getting over stressed due to hydro test pressure.Could you please give me any proper evidence to prove that this is acceptable as per code.

Sorry jtseng, now i dont have sketch.

RE: Taper in shell area

If I guess what you try to say, the taper area shall be above the tangent line and then it automatically becomes part of the head. If what I guess is correct, you don't worry about the hydrotest, you just did not input correctly in PV elite.

RE: Taper in shell area

I'll have to reverse what I said above- see UW-13, which shows the taper past the tangent point.
