Water Demand at Lab Facilties

Water Demand at Lab Facilties

Water Demand at Lab Facilties

(OP)
Hello Everyone,
I am working on approximating water demands for a future laboratory facility. This is all at the planning level but wonder if anyone outer is aware of any literature that can give me a starting point. Anything with daily unit demands per square foot would be very helpful and potentially any assumptions for wet vs dry labs. Thank you in advance for your help.

RE: Water Demand at Lab Facilties

not really based on square foot, estimate the number of fixture units

CVG,
This is at the very very early stage; at the planning level. Is more or less to quantify an order of magnitude. I must add that this is a large facility in the order of 100+ acres of research facility development. Fixture units will be the way to go, once a program has been developed and not anytime soon.

I must also admit that my initial intuition as an engineer was to direct myself to estimating future fixture unit count but this actually involves thinking a bit more like a planner. Thank you for your post.

Look around for a similar sized existing facility.

RE: Water Demand at Lab Facilties

your water use will be related to number of people at the lab, bathrooms, kitchens, landscaping and then any special water usage for the lab. you will need to estimate that, there is no typical demand per acre that would work for this. you have not given any information on the type of lab, but you could assume a typical number such as 2,000 gpd per acre (light industrial). this will not include any special water use in the lab.
