Tensile modulus for a hard-anodized material

Tensile modulus for a hard-anodized material

Does hard-anodizing the surface of a 7075-T651 aluminum rod have an effect on the tensile (Young's) modulus of the rod? What kind of effect does compression have on the surface versus the whole rod?

I appreciate any knowledge on the subject. I'm unfamiliar with the process of hard-anodizing and am concerned over assuming which elastic modulus to use in my calculations. I am unable to test for this value experimentally.

IF the anodize takes up a majority of the thickness then it might have an impact.
The compressive stress on the surface is offset by tension on the core.
I can't see the anodizing have any appreciable impact.

As Ed already mentioned, unless the anodizing accounts for a substantial amount of the cross-section, then it will have no meaningful effect on modulus. Typical thickness of the anodic coating is less than 50 micrometers, so for rods that have diameters measuring in mm, the effect is non-existant.
