colour blind QC inspector
(OP)
forgive me if this thread is at the wrong location.
as the title said, i am a colour blind QC inspector working in a factory producing tanks and pressure vessel. there is not much color identification that i have to do during my daily jobs except for the dye penetrant testing. and DPT red dot or crackline is easily visible to me even as a CB person. to me DPT is not a problem at all.
My company is not a state of the art or a highly reputable manufacturer. just decent normal factory. but suddenly they request me to go for an eye test. woppssss i know im gonna fail the test. what should i explain to the doctor so that he can understand that failing ishihara eye test does not mean in-capabilities to perform certain jobs.
and also can anyone give me some guidance on what i should do next. should i stay in inspection field or do something else?? please give me some idea

RE: colour blind QC inspector
So explain to the doctor that part of your job involves color dependent visual acuity. If possible, bring photographs or drawings of a dye penetration test so the doctor can understand.
Then discuss in detail which Ishihara images you can and can't distinguish and what that means.
RE: colour blind QC inspector
The only QC inspections there would be problems with is in electrical wiring or something to that extent.
I believe that it goes back to the company and the inspection that is being performed on whether color blindness is appropriate or not.

Color vision
You must be able to differentiate between the colors used in the NDT method(s) for which certification is required.
So if you can do this for the methods you use, or specifically utilize colors you can see there would be no issue.

We have color blind inspectors at our shop as well. I have a statement in our Writtn Practice, which details how inspectors are qualified and certified, that successful completion of the practical examination demonstrates adequate color discrimination for the tests to be performed. The only craveat is in MT where I restrict the color of mag particles that the color blind person may use to the color(s) used during the practical.
I have not had any issues with this approach from any auditor including navy and commercial nuclear auditors.

if navy or nuclear auditor accept CB person as an inspector. then they would be no reason for my small factory to disqualified me for failing to read numbers from ishihara chart.
actually i live in Malaysia. im tired of discrimination from most employer in Malaysia for CB person. they never understand how colour blind is. they doesnt know that failing ishihara test does not mean i cant do the job. they just too straightforward.
in Malaysia, the new laws makes it very difficult for CB person just to have a driving licence, and it is even harder to get a goods delivery licence for driving lorries. i have been driving for 10 years, and never ran over a red light for failing to identify the colour, in any weather condition and time. they never understand this matter

anyway i just wanna know if color blind person can still be a certified welding inspector either by twi or aws. there is a section in aws application form for the doctor to fill in CB or not. im still having a confusion on this issue. A call from TWI in my country doesnt help much, and most of the WI i know has a normal color vision.
and what about welding engineer. does welding engineer cant be CB too??
