Modern Design (Contemporary Community Design)

Modern Design (Contemporary Community Design)

Modern Design (Contemporary Community Design)

(OP)
I am a designer who has just received the privilege
of designing a project that I believe has not been
done before.

The project is in a community with 15,000+/- people
and has such a historical significance to our country.
There is a national park that contains memorials that
are older than our country.

So...our client wishes to create a modern community. I
have had a concept of one day designing a community
that will make my reputation preceed me. I believe this
will be the chance.

My concept...I want to convince the city and client
to use the historical properties and history with
a modern community.

I am talking real modern...such as concepts that include
50 foot neighborhood roads for community block parties...
round-a-bouts with lifted islands...and more...

Any body have ideas?  I can't create the best design
without help.

RE: Modern Design (Contemporary Community Design)

I don't think that 50-ft wide roads would be desirable in a residential community, blacktop and concrete isn't all that pretty.  Perhaps reducing the size of the roads and making large parks for block parties?  Also, common areas for gardens for residents would be nice as well.

Check out the Disney subdivisions near Kissimmie FL.  Small front yard set-backs, front porches, parking/garage in rear, mixed occupancies (office/residential).

Check out some current planning magazines/books.

RE: Modern Design (Contemporary Community Design)

There is a sub-division in Winnipeg Manitoba, that doesn’t have any front streets. The sub division consists of a ring road with “back lane access” to the houses. The result is a wide large park like front yard with amply of play area for the children and no traffic noise or impact to the houses.

The main drawback is that there is not sufficient visitor parking. If the ring roads enclosed smaller areas and had plenty of parking areas the sub division would be much more livable.

If you are interested I could take some digital photo’s of the area and e-mail them to you.
