SS Shell Rolling

SS Shell Rolling

SS Shell Rolling

(OP)
Is it required that SS shell should be rolled on SS rollers?
What if SS is rolled on CS rollers?

RE: SS Shell Rolling

Well, it'll pick up iron contamination and it'll rust unless you passivate or something.

Better to pad the rollers, some use urethane covered rolls.

BTW I assume you are talking about rolls for handling the unit, rather than plate rolls.

Mike

Mike,

thank you for valued comments.
I am talikg about the shell (for a pressure vessel) rolling from plate.
Thank you.

RE: SS Shell Rolling

Fizza453, the same comments pretty much apply. Cover the rolls if you can.

Mike

RE: SS Shell Rolling

In reality all that I have ever seen used are steel (cast usually) rolls.
The surfaces are usually then later cleaned.
If for HX service often just by blasting.
If it is a process vessel the inside will be passivated.

RE: SS Shell Rolling

I agree with EdStainless. I'm not aware of any fabricators that are using SS rolls. In our case we typically preclean the rolls by wiping them down and inspecting the surface of the rolls to ensure they're free of projections and/or contamination.
For rolling thinner polished SS we have wrapped the rolls but it can be problematic.
Even heads formed at high temperatures are typically formed using CS tooling. We typically plan on pickling and passivating hot formed SS parts because they do tend to exhibit gross surface contamination.
For food service or other applications where you have to be absolutely free of contamination, pickle and passivate.
For most other applications rolling on CS rolls won't present problems if you take the basic precautions outlined above.
