Full Bore vs Reduce Bore: Ball Valves upstream & downstream / steam service

Full Bore vs Reduce Bore: Ball Valves upstream & downstream / steam service

Full Bore vs Reduce Bore: Ball Valves upstream & downstream / steam service

(OP)
When using a ball valve piped upstream and downstream with a steam trap in steam service, do you use a full bore ball valve upstream and a reduce bore downstream OR do you use full bore to be used upstream and downstream? Want to use best practices

RE: Full Bore vs Reduce Bore: Ball Valves upstream & downstream / steam service

Jacsc,
Considering the size of piping you probably have for Steam Trap Manifolds it would not make a big difference between using a Full Port or a Reduced Port Ball Valve.
Count up the number of Steam Trap Manifolds you will likely have on the job, multiplied times the number of valves at each manifold times the cost for (a) full Port Valves and then (b) Reduced Port Valves.
I would choose the less expensive option.

prognosis: Lead or Lag

RE: Full Bore vs Reduce Bore: Ball Valves upstream & downstream / steam service

As long as the reduced bore is installed in vertical then as pennpiper noted, I would go for the cost effective solution, i.e. reduced bore.

Sorry , but I thought ball valves are not recommended in steam servive !

Ball valves are used in steam service everyday and have been for more than 50 years. Think vents and drains. You may not want to use one for main steam throttling, but for on/off, they work well.
