Hot Air Vacuum Pump

Hot Air Vacuum Pump

(OP)
Hello all,

I need some guidance sorting through the plethora of options I face.

The job: I need a small Vacuum Pump that can pull air through a lit cigar at 1 to 5cfm, for at least 30 seconds at a time.

I have looked at rotary vane pumps, Wob-L pumps, diaphragm pumps, etc. I could use some experienced feedback. It would have to be able to handle hot air, be quiet, and be small (6 inches largest dimension). Smaller is better, and cheaper is always good.

Thank you for any help,
Crit

RE: Hot Air Vacuum Pump

The pressure drop is small, right? In the tens of Pascals I suspect.

A fan should be able to do this.

I tried using a computer fan to force air through the cigar. There was too much back-pressure for this to be effective.

The induction suction is very cool, but I am looking for something that can be built into a small structure/appliance. It would be attached to a cone that a cigar gets put against to have air drawn through it.

Hire somebody who loves cigars??

RE: Hot Air Vacuum Pump

The small vacuum pumps that are used for sample systems sounds about right.
I would put a small filter in the line just so don't pull junk into the pump.

If you didn't mind using running water an eductor would be the best. No moving parts, nothing to wear or break.

RE: Hot Air Vacuum Pump

What about the idea of lighting the cigar, and then placing it in a chamber that is positively pressurized to get the flow you require through the cigar? I imagine a Pyrex cylinder (labware-like) with a "holder" at one end into which you place the "mouth" end of the cigar. (Slightly) pressurized air is let into the glass chamber, smoking the cigar and forcing the smoke out the "holder" end. Would something like that work for you?

RE: Hot Air Vacuum Pump

Chamber on the ash end of the cigar, using an air mattress pump or similar to pressurize? Maybe even an accordian type foot pump, or a fireplace hand pump thingamajig, depending on how consistent your airflow needs to be.
