Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

What temperature will be considered to be safe for Austenitic Stainelss steel for continuous heating application ? If it is heated continuously/intermittently to 300 degrees centigrade, is there any metallurgical deterioration ?

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

There will be somme decline in tensile properties. Design codes have taken this into account.

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

There is no metallurgical degradation. Once the material is cooled back to ambient temperature, the tensile properties return to original reported properties.

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

At 300C, even for very long term there will not be any metallurgical damage to any SS grade that I know of.
The strength and modulus will both be slightly lower at temp, but not much at this low of a temp.

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

If the temperature is just 300C, why do you need to consider expensive austenitic stainless steels. You can try some of the other alternatives.

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

300C only ? I have been designing for many units using high carbon content 304H SS and continuously cooking at 730C. No one ever ask how long it will last or fail.

Thanks for clarifying. Are the above comments applicable if temperature is 500 degrees centigrade ?

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

Varoon, this is not a Yes or No forum. It provides you guidance and you should make the final call. I think, you should exercise your discretion. Also, next time, please provide more details of your service conditions, existing practice and challenges,to make the discussion more meaningful.

RE: Safe temperature for Stainless Steel

Varoon, you've repeated this question for both 300 deg and 500 deg, for both CS and SStl in two different questions on the forum - but without any supporting details or information in either question.
