S8D1 Appendix 13 Calculations

S8D1 Appendix 13 Calculations

S8D1 Appendix 13 Calculations

(OP)
I just received a set of calculations from a vendor regarding a rectangular vessel that we are purchasing. It is essentially a 19"x14"x38" (inside dimensions) box, with 1" thick plates for all sides. I have attached a basic sketch of the box.

The calculations that I received from them were done in CodeCalc, and for the input they selected a short-side (H) length of 19" and a long side (h) length of 14".

My question is whether or not these are the right dimensions to input into this program. When the analysis is run it passes the appendix 13 checks, but I would think that the worst case dimensions should be used, ie 38" and 19". When I run these dimensions through my copy of CodeCalc with the rest of the inputs the same, they fail.

Can someone please provide clarification on the correct dimensions to use while performing a appendix 13 analysis? I looked in the S8D1 example problem manual (PTB-4), which uses the same selection (the two shorter sides), but it just seems un-intuitive to me, perhaps I am just picturing it wrong.

Thanks.

RE: S8D1 Appendix 13 Calculations

pdiculous963, use of the two shorter dimensions is correct, per Appendix 13, 13-4(h), equations are based on vessels with length to side dimension (H or h) ratio greater than 4.

You should be good, but I hope those are not the actual weld details in your sketch.

Regards,

Mike

Great, thanks for the quick response! And no, those are not my actual weld details, like I said, it was just a rough sketch.
