Self-intersecting sweep doesn't form valid solid body

Self-intersecting sweep doesn't form valid solid body

(OP)
Hi, I'm trying to model a retainer for a USB port cover. Think of the thing that retains your gas cap. It's a combination of an o-ring to do sealing, and a string that tucks down inside the housing of the part. I have a sweep that goes around sharp bends and the cross section self-intersects. Right now the part is modeled as 3 separate solid bodies and they won't unite properly.

Can anyone help me figure out how to get this geometry to work? I'm using NX 7.5.

Thanks

RE: Self-intersecting sweep doesn't form valid solid body

You cannot have self-intersecting solids, period. I've modified (see attached model) a couple of your sketches, in one I simply changed the radius of an arc (0.8 tp 0.9) and in the second I replaced 2 arcs with a spline. These changes resulted in valid (non-self-intersecting) solids and then they United without any problems.
