ASME CSD-1 Part CE-110 Question

ASME CSD-1 Part CE-110 Question

ASME CSD-1 Part CE-110 Question

(OP)
I have a sterilizer and was told that I needed an emergency shutdown switch placed so that the electric boilers that generate the steam for the sterilizers can be shut off quickly. The issue is, the sterilizer that controls the actual boiler runs off of 120 VAC. The boiler itself has heating elements that run off of 208 VAC 3 phase. My question is, which should the emergency shutdown switch shut off, the 120 VAC to the boiler controller or the 208 VAC 3 phase to the boiler heater element?

RE: ASME CSD-1 Part CE-110 Question

Are you in the US, if so what state are you in? I would shut off the 3-phase. In the event of a failure you want to cut off the fuel supply. For an electric boiler, the fuel is the 3-phase power to the elements. Depending on the nature of the failure, it is conceivable that just shutting off the 120V may not isolate the heaters from the 3-phase power.

These two sterilizers are in Iowa. Each boiler has its own breaker box, but we are being told that there also needs to be a panic button located on the outside of the room that houses the sterilizers. I was thinking about maybe a relay that would shut off the three phase to the breaker box when the panic button was pushed.

Since these sterilizers are Steris, do you guys have anything like that? Or would you recommend having a local electrician come in and take care of this?
