Soil pressure on burried vessel
Soil pressure on burried vessel
(OP)
How to calculate the soil pressure on burried vessel if soil density is known, burrial depth is known. Burrial depth is 5 feet, vessel OD is 10 feet, would soil pressure be product of (burrial depth plus OD), Value of g and soil density?

RE: Soil pressure on burried vessel
You shall use the maximum g from (water, dry soil, wet soil) to determine the external pressure=static head, just like a submarine. Then you shall calculate the buoyant force (uplift force) to design your anchor system.
External pressure psi = 0.433 x height in ft x density in "g". Use the height to the bottom of the shell.
uplift force Lbs= vessel volume in cubic ft x 62.4, and consider vessel in empty case so not much downward weight to compensate the uplift force.
Some people use strap to hold the vessel down. I still design as a regular drum with saddles and anchor bolts, and sit on two burried concrete piers, simple and easy. Just watch out to double your corrosion allowance.

I have used UL-58 to calculate the buckling pressure.
the value of g I shall take from the soil study report.
