17-4 Non-pressure Part

17-4 Non-pressure Part

17-4 Non-pressure Part

(OP)
Background:
We build equipment that has a steam heated screw from 304L or 316L. The screw are built per ASME pressure vessel code. We currently weld on flighting to the outside of the steam pressurized shell. We are wanting to use 17-4 H900 plate to make the flighting out of. We have used 17-4 on other non heated equipment and and are pleased with the wear characteristics. ASME VIII Div 1 dose not require non-pressure part materials to meet a code specification.

Question:
Is 17-4 considered a weldable material to ASME? We have great success welding it to 304L and 316L with ER 630 wire.
What is the best direction to take in our case?

Thank you
Trevor

In other words, does ASME allow 17-4PH? The reply is yes, for non-pressure retaining material or bolting. Welding is at your own risk for non-pressure part applications.
