Unlisted steel qualified by PQR Clause 4. (AWS D1.1)
Unlisted steel qualified by PQR Clause 4. (AWS D1.1)
(OP)
Dear, All
If unlisted steel qualified by PQR Clause 4. D1.1 ( Single V Butt joint with ceramic backing). Can qualified for?
1, PQR Base metal ( Single Bevel, Double Bevel, Double V with ceramic backing , steel backing)?
2, PQR Base metal ( Single Bevel, Double Bevel, Double V with back gouging)?
I have check at Table 4.5 sub 31. A change in groove type(e.g..single-V to double-V), except qualified of any CJP groove weld qualified for any groove detail conforming with the requirements of 3.12 or 3.13
I still confusing about change of groove types. This is Essential Variable?
Thanks in advance for u advise

if your PQR is CJP, then groove type is not an essential variable.
if your PQR using backing, then you must use backing for fabrication.

2) Yes, provided you use a prequalified joint detail in production, and comply with all of the other code requirements.
That essential variable is intended to mean that a change in groove type is an essential variable if you exceed the allowable tolerances in clause 3 for the applicable prequalified joint details. You cannot qualify a CJP groove weld and assume that you are now qualified to weld all CJP grooves, regardless of joint dimensions and tolerances.
Please note that there is also a requirement to qualify corner and T joints using the same groove configuration to be used in production (4.9.1.1 in the 2000 edition).

A different prequalified WPS can be written for any of the prequalified base metals, any of the prequalified welding processes, any of the prequalified joints, but neither the WPS qualified by testing or the prequalified WPS is qualified to weld the unlisted base metal to any of the prequalified base metals.
