Field Steel Erection Inspector

Field Steel Erection Inspector

Field Steel Erection Inspector

(OP)
when is a field steel erector inspector required during erection of the steel?.....
in this case the fabricator is also doing the erection of the steel...
if required, who is reponsible for hiring the inspector..
I am supplying Design Engineering dwgs and a set of the approved shop fab dwgs to the field supervisor for his reference...
thanks in advance for your input and experience..

RE: Field Steel Erection Inspector

I imagine it depends on the jurisdiction having authority and the contract you have with your client.

With most projects I do I only make field visits to familiarize myself with the construction and to make sure that the project, in general, is in conformance to my requirements (or something like that). I usually issue a "Program of Structural Tests and Inspections" to the owner. This lists out specifically when, where and how the test/inspections are to be performed by a third party. This is to be in compliance with chapter 17 of the IBC. To avoid conflicts of interest the owner is suppose to pay for these inspections. I believe some engineering companies will perform these inspections themselves but I am not set up or trained to perform these tasks (how am I suppose to perform a UT on a CJP weld).

There are also in house inspections that are required of the fabricator. I believe most of these issues pf fabricator inspections can be resolved by hiring an AISC certified fabricator.

more info on the project...it is approx $6 million project..industrial..
I ,also, am not qualified to inspect....I do not have cpt 17 of IBC..someone mentioned that there is a cut-off dollar amount for the size of the project where special field inspection is not required...

RE: Field Steel Erection Inspector

Tell the owner to hire somebody!!

RE: Field Steel Erection Inspector

I'm not familiar with the dollar cut off amount, maybe that is something specific to your jurisdiction. I am almost certain that a $6 million industrial project should follow chapter 17 of the IBC (if IBC was used for the design).
