Heard one the other day on the radio that got me thinking about the Wythe pronunciation thread. The local rock station has various musicians endorsements that they play between songs, and Randy Bachman of BTO is one of them. To my surprise, he pronounces his name as if it was spelled Back-man. I always pronounced it like J. S. Bach!

German names are easy. Try living in the "Dutch Triangle". Bachman is not nearly as confusing as Hoelzel or Hietpas or Huibregste.

By pure coincidence "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" is playing on my iPod right now!

There is a youtube clip out there of Randy Bachman being interviewed by Dick Clark and Randy is asked how his name is pronounced. He said in the States it is pronounced Backman, in Canada (where he is from) it is pronounced like 'Bach'.

Apparently the record company thought Backman sounded more rock'n'roll

I grew up in Wisconsin, where there are tons of German names and everyone knows how to pronounce them. When I went to California and Florida, I was surprised at how many people had trouble with these names.

German is easy to pronounce. There are rules. Germans like rules.

I too notice that many German and Netherlandish surnames are badly mangled in the USA.
