ordinate dimensions
ordinate dimensions
(OP)
When I use ordinate dimensions in a sketch, sometimes the text gets placed on top of the dimension line. I haven't been able to figure out what the variable that causes this is. Any suggestions?
Thanks!
Thanks!

RE: ordinate dimensions
I couldn't get mine to do what yours does.
If you e-mail me something, I'll have a look at it for you.
Question though, Why is this a problem?
I never use my model/sketch dimensions in a drawing.
There is so much clean-up to do after I insert them, that I'm always better off to dimension my drawing after the fact.
So exactly what are you doing?
RE: ordinate dimensions
I've used Autocad for many years so I'm acustomed to moving entities around without anything else getting affected.
From what you said, I take it that it is more common to add dimensions to your drawing rather than use sketch dimensions? Does the model change when you do this? Lastly, are there any issues when you use ordinate dimensions in your drawing?
Thanks for your help!

RE: ordinate dimensions
When you installed SolidWorks you were given the opportunity to allow dimension changes from the drawing. Most of what I do is ordinate dimensioning; there have not been any problems with this method.
Because you are new to SolidWorks I would like to recommend, if you have not done so already, is to create a template and put the title block information in the properties. Do not enter your title, names, dates, and etc using text. If you are interested check out thread Thread559-23230

RE: ordinate dimensions
Bradley is right - you set the option to have drawing dimensions "drive" your model when you install the software. But these are only the inserted dimensions from the model, Not the dimensions you manually add to the drawing afterwards - these are reference only.
They will update if the model changes, but they don't change the model.
I'm 90% sure there's away to change this after installing, but I can't find it right now.
I've had no problems with ordinate dimensions in a drawing - I prefer them most of the tme.
They were tricky for me to find, though.
After you pick the dimension command, right click and you'll see the ordinate dimansion options.
